AI-Generated Portraits
A Parallel Universe
I started making AI portraits with Midjourney in early 2023. As versions 4 through 7 were released, I became interested in how each one changed the look of the images. I also used Magnific AI to upscale some of them to 4K.
In 2025, I added Google's Nano Banana and OpenAI Images to my process. These tools gave me more control over faces and made it possible to create images that look close to traditional portrait photography.
I edited every portrait here in Photoshop, using the same methods I use for my photographs. The images are generated, but the editing process still feels familiar. To me, they are portraits of people from a parallel world that does not exist.
AI Street Photography
Over the past year, I have been asking whether AI can create the "decisive moment" found in street photography. I made scenes based on odd coincidences and details that do not quite line up.
A photographer would need luck and good timing to catch these moments in real life. With AI, I can create them without waiting for chance. That makes the images easier to produce, but I am not sure they have the same value once the moment is no longer rare.
